Patient Assessment

• Confirm the presence of bruxism (grinding, gnashing, clenching) and document any signs of occlusal wear, cusp fractures, mobility, or TMJ discomfort.

• Select Bruxogard Soft for patients who exhibit mild-to-moderate bruxing patterns or are under 12 years of age.

Appliance Fitting (≈ 1 minute)

1. Immerse the appliance in hot (not boiling) water until the material becomes pliable.

2. Remove, shake off excess water, and place it over the upper arch.

3. Instruct the patient to bite down gently and press with fingers to adapt the guard to teeth and palatal contours.

4. Cool the guard in cold water to set the shape, then verify snug retention and comfort.

Night-Time Wear

• Instruct the patient to wear the appliance every night during sleep.

• Emphasise that consistent use protects dentition and TM joints from further damage.

Maintenance & Replacement

• Clean daily with a soft brush and mild soap; store dry in a ventilated case.

• Inspect at each recall. Replace the guard if it shows cracks, thinning, or loss of retention.

• For rapid wear, switch to Bruxogard Medium or a full-coverage acrylic splint.

Patient Education & Motivation

• Show the patient any wear marks on the guard to illustrate the force of their habit—this often heightens motivation to seek long-term solutions (stress management, habit awareness, etc.).

• Reinforce that while the appliance protects the teeth, addressing the underlying causes of bruxism (e.g., anxiety, tension) may require collaboration with other healthcare professionals.

Contraindications & Precautions

• Do not use in the presence of untreated caries, active periodontal infection, or severe gag reflex without prior management.

• Discontinue use and reassess if the patient develops new pain, ulceration, or significant discomfort.

Mild to moderate bruxism (teeth grinding or clenching).

Initial treatment for patients showing early signs of bruxism, such as Tooth wear, Jaw discomfort, Headaches related to clenching, TMJ tenderness or clicking.

Suitable for patients unwilling or unable to afford custom dental splints
