GLASS IONOMER CEMENTS:

As defined by Kenneth J Annusavice, ‘Glass Ionomer’ is the generic name of a group of materials that use silicate glass powder and aqueous solution of polyacrylic acid. Glass ionomer cements are among the most widely used dental cements for various modes of treatment. They are water based cements that form strong bonds with the tooth structure without the necessity for adhesive substances. They are used for various purposes ranging from cavity lining, cavity restorations, long term luting of fixed prostheses, sealing pits and fissures, fixing orthodontic brackets and has various other applications in dentistry. According to the ISO terminology they are called ‘poly alkenoate cements’. Due to its extensive use to replace dentin, it is also referred to as ‘dentin substitute’, ‘man made dentin’ and ‘artificial dentin’.

History of GIC:

In the year 1965, A.D Wilson mixed silicate glass powders and aqueous solutions of various organic acids. This included the use of polyacrylic acid too. But the set cement that resulted was sluggish. This material was neither reported nor published. However, in 1969, Glass Ionomer cements were invented and in 1971 were reported by Wilson and Kent (ASPA I). In 1972, an amended version of the original glass ionomer was done by Crisp and Wilson. This included the addition of tartaric acid (ASPA II). Further changes included the addition of methyl alcohol (ASPA III). The first marketable glass ionomer material came out in the year 1973.

Types of GIC:

There are different types of glass ionomers manufactured for the extensive and diverse range of application the material has in dentistry. The following are the nine types of glass ionomer cements classified based on the application:

  • Type 1                    - Luting
  • Type 2                    - Restorative
  • Type 3                    - Liner/Base
  • Type 4                    - Pit & Fissure Sealant
  • Type 5                    - Orthodontic luting purposes
  • Type 6                    - Core build-up material
  • Type 7                    - High Fluoride releasing command set
  • Type 8                    - Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART)
  • Type 9                    - Paediatric Glass Ionomer cements

Composition of GIC:

Glass ionomer materials are supplied as powder and liquid components which are to be mixed using a plastic spatula in a mixing paper pad. The composition of the powder and liquid are as follows:

Powder:

It is made up of acid soluble fluoroaluminosilicate glass.

  • Silica
  • Alumina
  • Aluminium fluoride
  • Calcium fluoride
  • Sodium fluoride
  • Aluminium phosphate
  • Strontium, Barium or Zinc Oxide

Liquid:

  • Polyacrylic acid
  • Itaconic acid
  • Malic acid
