It is a Piezoelectric scaler. An ultrasonic scaler is used to remove calculus rapidly from the tooth surface. They work mechanically using high vibrational energy that effectively removes calculus. Ultrasonic scalers also create shock waves that disrupt bacteria biofilms so that the plaque bacteria and calculus can be therapeutically flushed from the teeth by a small jet of water or antibacterial mouthwash which is emitted from near the top of the scaler. The jet of water helps to cool the tip of the ultrasonic scaler and is highly effective at helping to flush away debris from the tooth being treated. The scaling tip vibrates in the ultrasonic range of 20-45 kHz (i.e. 20,000 to 45,000 times per second), with an optimum frequency between 18 kHz and 32kHz.
