ORTHODONTICS ARCHWIRES:
The wires used in orthodontics generate a biomechanical force which is communicated through the brackets. This force is utilized for the purpose of tooth movement and this principle is central to the practice of orthodontics. They are the active components of fixed orthodontic appliances that bring about various tooth movements. Consistent research and development has resulted various orthodontic archwires that have improved precision and controllability of tooth movement.
History of Orthodontic Archwires:
In the past noble metal such as Gold, Platinum, Iridium, Silver and various other alloys were employed as archwires. These metals and alloys had great resistance to corrosion and acceptable esthetics. However, they lacked flexibility and tensile strength. In the year 1887, E H Angle introduced German silver into the field of orthodontics. This was in use up to the latter half of the 20th century. Other materials introduced by Angle were wood, rubber, vulcanite, piano wire and silk threads. During the late 1930s stainless steel was introduced as for the purpose of fabrication of orthodontic appliances. By the 1950s, stainless steel was the most preferred alloy by most orthodontists. Elgiloy, a cobalt chrome alloy came into existence during the 1950s. Nickel titanium alloys with their unique superelastic properties were used as orthodontic wire materials in the 1970s. Charles J Burstone marketed beta titanium alloys as TMA during the 1980s. Recently, the introduction of materials such fiber optics and composite archwires has made orthodontic treatment far more esthetic than the olden days.
What are the physical properties of orthodontic archwires?
The physical properties of materials are the way they respond to the changes in their environment. They characteristics of the material that are independent of external influences are termed as ‘material properties’. The properties that are associated with the conditions of the environment are the physical properties such as mechanical, chemical, thermal and magnetic.
The physical properties of orthodontic archwires are listed below:
Mechanical Properties of Ortho Archwires:
- Strength
- Tensile Strength
- Compressive Strength
- Shear Strength
- Hardness
- Elasticity
- Elastic Modulus
- Resilience
- Plasticity
- Ductility
- % of Elongation
- Yield Strength
Electrical and Electrochemical Properties of Ortho Archwires:
- Electrode potential
- Electrode resistivity
Thermal Properties of Ortho Archwires:
- Thermal Expansion
- Heat flow
- Thermal Conductivity
- Thermal Diffusivity
What are the different types of orthodontic archwires?
Stainless Steel Archwires:
In the year 19191, Hauptmeyer introduced stainless steel to the field of dentistry. These alloys were used to make a dental prosthesis. In 1930, E H Angle used stainless steel for the formation of ligature wire. Stainless steel began to be used widely as the orthodontic archwire of choice. A J Wilcock introduced round, high tensile stainless steel archwires which were Australian archwires.
Cobalt Chromium Archwires:
In the 1960s these alloys were used to manufacture watch springs by a watch company called Elgin. They were used as orthodontic archwires after the Rocky Mountain Orthodontics company marketed them as Elgiloy. The advantage of Elgiloy wires are that they have great resistance to corrosion, have outstanding formability and resistance to distortion. But the necessity for heat treatment and higher modulus of elasticity are the disadvantages associated with using Elgiloy archwires.
Nickel Titanium Archwires:
William Buchler alloyed Nitnol (NiTi Naval Ordinance Laboratory) in the year 1962. Their super elastic properties made them very useful in orthodontic therapy. They have the lowest force delivery among the four orthodontic wire alloys and excellent springback in bendings. This was especially enhanced in the cases superelastic and shape memory alloys.
Beta Titanium Alloys:
Beta titanium was introduced by Burstone and Goldberg as a wrought orthodontic wire. They were marketed as TMA (titanium molybdenum alloy).
Other Archwires:
Titanium Niobium wires were introduced by Dr Rohith Sachdeva in 1995 as an esthetic archwire. Goldberg et al
introduced the fabrication of orthodontic archwires from fiber reinforced composites. Optiflex archwires composed of silicon di oxide, silicon resin and nylon outer layer are esthetic archwires used in conjunction with ceramic or clear brackets in patients demanding higher esthetics during orthodontic treatment.
