Periodontal Scalers:

Scalers are heavy instrument, usually double ended, which are employed in removal of calculus from the supragingival area. The different types of periodontal scalers include sickle scalers, hoe scalers, chisel scalers and posterior scalers. The sickle scalers are the most commonly used variants and they are used with a pull stroke. The basic characteristics of a sickle scaler include a triangular shape, a double cutting edge and a pointed sharp tip.  Hoe scalers are used to remove ledges and rings of calculus. They are used to carry out procedures such as subgingival scaling, root planning and removal of the soft tissue lining of the periodontal pocket. Curettes may be classified into universal and area specific curettes. Universal curettes can be used in any area. Both the cutting edges are used and the blade is curved in one plane. The face of the blade is at a 90 degree angle to the shank. The area specific curettes are indicated for use in specific areas. Only one cutting edges are used and they are curved in two planes. They have been designed and angled to adapt to specific anatomic areas of the teeth.

 

Periodontal Probes:

Periodontal probes are graduated probes that are used to locate, measure and mark periodontal pockets. They are also used in various other clinical diagnostic procedures such as assessment of gingival bleeding, measuring probing depths and others. Periodontal probes are usually long, thin and blunted at the working end of the instrument. The state of health of the periodontium can be assessed by using periodontal probes. The markings inscribed onto the head of the instrument are designed to make accurate and precise readings. Periodontal probes have been classified into 5 generations.

 

Periodontal Knives:

These knives are used in gingivectomy procedures. Types of periodontal knives include Kirkland knife, Merrifield knife and Orban interdental knife. The Kirkland knife is used for gingivectomy procedures. They are either single or double ended instruments. The entire periphery of the knifes is the cutting edge. Orbans knife and Merrifield knife are used for interdental areas. They are spear shaped and have cutting edges on both sides and are either double or single ended instruments.

Periodontal Files:

The primary function of periodontal files is to crush or fracture large deposits of tenacious calculus. They can roughen the root surface if not used properly, hence they are indicated for fine scaling procedures.
