ENDODONTIC EQUIPMENT:

The field of endodontics has undergone consistent development over the years. The traditional techniques used in determining working length, canal instrumentation, obturation and other parts of endodontic treatment have been time consuming procedures. With the emergence of advanced endodontic equipment, the chair time spent for each clinical procedure has been reduced to a considerable amount, in addition to higher precision.

What are the types of Endodontic Equipment?

As endodontic therapy is becoming a more routine part of dental practice, new products are constantly being made available to practicing dentists to enhance precision and performance easier. The commonly used and highly significant equipment used in endodontics are apex locators, endomotors, obturation systems and pulp testers.

APEX LOCATORS:

The determination of working length in endodontic therapy is one of the most significant phases of treatment, as it serves as a guideline for the subsequent steps of cleaning, shaping and obturation. Accurate working length assessment is essential to avoid any possibility of over-extending preparation which will result in damage to the periapical tissues or under prepared canals, ultimately leading to failure of therapy.

Traditional techniques used to assess the working length include radiographic assessment methods, tactile methods, apical periodontal sensitivity and paper point measurements. However, all these were technique sensitive allowing a greater chance for miscalculation. The introduction of electronic methods to aid in working length assessment were an important advancement in endometrics. They can be classified based on their mode of working as – resistance based, impedance based and frequency based.

ENDOMOTORS:

Shaping of root canals had been carried out using hand instrumentation techniques for a major portion of endodontics. These techniques focused on various motions with which the endodontic hand files were used to create a continuously tapering form for the root canal. Proficient shaping of the canal has appreciable effects in obturation and the overall prognosis of treatment as well. The emergence of rotary file systems, the time taken to effectively shape the canal was reduced by a large amount, in addition to offering higher standards of canal preparation. The commonly faced problems during root canal shaping such as ledge formation, transportation, perforation and blocks can be minimized with an efficient knowledge and practice of rotary endodontics. Endomotors, introduced in the 1990s, electronic devices used to power handpieces to aid in automated root canal preparation. Dentsply X-Smart, Saeshin Endo Cube and Sybron Endo Endotouch TC are a few of the many endomotors available online.

OBTURATION SYSTEMS:

Following cleaning and shaping of the root canal, 3D filling of the canal system is the subsequent step in endodontic therapy. Regardless of the techniques used in obturation, the objectives have remained the same i.e to effectively seal every exit of the root canal system. Gutta percha, the most commonly used obturation material undergoes phase transmissions when heated around 46oC (115oF). At this temperature it transforms from the beta phase to the alpha phase. The softening point of gutta percha is 64oC (147oF). These transformations in phases of gutta percha is important in thermoplastic obturation methods which are mostly used in new age obturation systems.

The different types of obturation techniques used in endodontics are lateral condensation, vertical compaction, continuous wave, warm lateral condensation, injection techniques, thermomechanical methods, carrier based and chemoplastisized methods.

PULP TESTERS:

Diagnosis plays a significant role in any treatment. In certain clinical situations, the assessment of the vitality of the tooth becomes quite challenging, hence making it difficult to arrive at a diagnosis. To aid in such scenarios, the use of electric pulp testers is highly beneficial. Electric pulp testing (EPT) is one of the easier, most common, repeatable type of pulp test that is used to test the vitality of the tooth.

The objective of pulp testing is to stimulate the Aδ fibres in the dental pulp to assess the pulpal vitality.
